Mentally Ill Woman Dies After Being Slammed to the Ground by Police

Mentally Ill Woman Dies After Being Slammed to the Ground by Police

A 37 year old African-American woman recently died after being slammed to the ground by Cleveland police.

Tanesha Anderson, who suffered from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, passed away at the Cleveland Clinic after being physically assaulted by Ohio cops. Anderson died approximately two hours after police used a “takedown” move on her during a confrontation.

“They killed my sister,” her brother Joell Anderson said Thursday night, according to “I watched it.”

Police were responding to a call that Anderson was causing a disturbance.

Family members believed that police could help calm their sister and initially, all parties agreed that Anderson should be taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation. That’s where the stories of what happened begin to diverge.

“As the officers escorted Anderson to the police vehicle, she began actively resisting the officers,” police spokesman Sgt. Ali Pillow said in a press release.

“The woman began to kick at officers,” he said. “A short time later the woman stopped struggling and appeared to go limp. Officers found a faint pulse on the victim and immediately called EMS.”

According to Joell Anderson, his sister was fine until she was put inside the squad car, then she became agitated due to the confined space and tried to get out of the car.

“She was more of a danger to herself than others,” he said.

He says Tanesha Anderson was calling out for her family as police were pushing her head back inside the car. Mr. Anderson also says a taser was pulled on his sister and he begged officers not to use it on her because she wasn’t a threat, just scared.

After trying and failing to get her situated in the vehicle, an officer slammed Ms. Anderson to the ground, then forced his knee in the handcuffed woman’s back. She never spoke or opened her eyes after that. Joell says he pleaded with officers to administer medical care but they refused to help the woman, preferring to wait until a female officer arrived at the scene.

“She was outgoing, silly, always joking,” Joell said of his sister. “She just wasn’t doing very well that day.”

Ms. Anderson lay dying on the ground for 20 minutes while waiting for EMS to arrive.

According to Al Jazeera, 50 percent of people killed by police are mentally ill.

Officer’s Body Camera Not Working When He Shot Man in the Back as He Ran Away

Officer’s Body Camera Not Working When He Shot Man in the Back as He Ran Away

An officer involved in a shooting that left Darrien Hunt dead was wearing a body camera, but the camera was not active during the incident, police say.

Utah authorities confirmed to FOX 13 on Friday that Officer Nicholas Judson was wearing a body camera that was not active when he shot Hunt in the back.

The NAACP held a protest at the headquarters of Saratoga Springs police in response to the revelation.

“What good does wearing a Body Camera by officers [do] if they are not turned on?” Jeanetta Williams, President for the NAACP’s Salt Lake Branch and Tri-State Conference of Idaho, Nevada and Utah, said in a press release issued late Friday night. “…It is fortunate that a local business had video footage that showed Darien Hunt running away from officers and not attacking them.”

As BreakingBrown previously reported, two officers were recently cleared in the fatal shooting of 22 year old Darrien Hunt, who was holding a samurai sword when he was shot dead. In explaining why the officers who confronted Hunt would not face charges, Utah County Attorney Jeff Buhman said the officers were reacting to a threat because Hunt lunged at them.

“He did not stop after being given a verbal command to stop,” Buhman said. “The time it would have taken for Mr. Hunt with the sword still in his hand after having stabbed or sliced at officers, it would have been a matter of seconds before he reached someone else.”

But as The Guardian previously confirmed with Tim Taylor, the chief deputy attorney for Utah county, “Hunt was in fact alleged to have lunged at the officers outside a bank several dozen yards away from where he ultimately died.”

Hunt was also shot six times in the back, according to the family’s independent autopsy.

Officer Darren Wilson Allegedly Caught on Video: “I’ll Lock Your @ss Up”

Officer Darren Wilson Allegedly Caught on Video: “I’ll Lock Your @ss Up”

Darren Wilson video

As we near a grand jury decision in the slaying of Michael Brown, new video published by The Free Thought Project allegedly shows Officer Darren Wilson violating the first amendment rights of a Ferguson resident:

According to the person who took the video he was in fact arrested, and he claims Officer Wilson lied on his report.

“He told me I had permission to ‘record’ him. As soon as I started filming, his attitude changed, and he arrested me,” the man, who wishes to remain anonymous for the time being, tells the Free Though Project in an exclusive interview.

As the American Civil Liberties Union notes, “Taking photographs and video of things that are plainly visible in public spaces is a constitutional right — and that includes the outside of federal buildings, as well as transportation facilities, and police and other government officials carrying out their duties.”

If you recall, Michael Brown’s friend Dorian Johnson claimed that the incident between himself, Michael Brown and Officer Darren Wilson began when Wilson told them to “Get the F*ck out of the street.”

From CNN‘s timeline:

Brown, 18, and Johnson, 22, are walking in the middle of the street, heading, Johnson says, to Johnson’s house, when a Ferguson police officer confronts them.

The officer tells the young men either “Get the f*** on the sidewalk” or “Get the f*** out of the street,” according to Johnson’s accounts to CNN and other news outlets.

The young men reply that they are “not but a minute away from our destination, and we would shortly be out of the street,” Johnson told CNN.

If this video is authentic, then it evidences a pattern of bullying by Wilson.

Watch the video below and underneath the video is a portion of the copy of the police report of the incident:

Maryland Cop Sentenced to Five Years for Shooting Suspect in the Back

Maryland Cop Sentenced to Five Years for Shooting Suspect in the Back

A Maryland cop who shot a fleeing suspect in the back, paralyzing him, was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday.

Former District Heights Officer Johnnie Riley was convicted of first and second-degree assault and misconduct in office for the 2012 shooting. During a traffic stop, Riley pulled over motorcyclist Kalvin Kyle because the bike he was riding on had been reported stolen. Riley handcuffed Kyle and placed him in the back of a squad car, but Kyle hopped from the back of the cruiser and took off running. Riley opened fire, hitting Kyle in the back and paralyzing him from the waist down.

Riley had been charged with first and second degree attempted murder, but the most serious of the two charges was thrown out by the judge while the other was tossed by the jury.

Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks was disappointed by the sentence.

“We respectfully disagree with the judge’s sentence in this case,” Ms. Alsobrooks said, according to the Washington Times. “Mr. Riley shot Mr. Kyle in the back, while he was handcuffed and had already been searched and deemed not a threat multiple times. For Mr. Riley to only receive a five-year sentence for this sends the wrong message to our community.”

Police Spray Pepper Balls to End Standoff With Sleeping Man, Arrest Him for Resisting

Police Spray Pepper Balls to End Standoff With Sleeping Man, Arrest Him for Resisting

sleeping at mall

“Starting November 1, 2012, a handgun license shall authorize a person to carry concealed or unconcealed,” reads Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin’s website. But when Tulsa police received a call about a black man sleeping in a mall parking lot with a gun in his lap, they automatically assumed that he was a criminal and sprung into action.

Officials say a security guard alerted police to a man who was sleeping in the parking lot of Woodland Hills Mall. After police arrived at the car, they engaged in a standoff with the sleeping man, first surrounding his car and then knocking on his window. When police got no response from the man, who was fast asleep, they cordoned off the area and sprayed pepper balls at the car.

The pepper balls were enough to wake up 23 year old Stephen Scyffore.

“When we got him out of the car, he didn’t appear to be on any drugs or anything.  Claims he was sleeping the whole time.  Never heard the announcements,” Tulsa Police Cpl. Mike Hanley told NewsOn6.

“This particular situation we used pepper balls which was very effective, non-lethal.  Never got hit with a ball, just got the effects of the pepper itself, which again, that worked.”

Although this case seems like a mistake where Scyffore wouldn’t have been charged unless his weapon was unlicensed, the man was still charged with resisting arrest, even though he was sleep during the standoff, which only lasted 15 minutes. He was also charged with possession of a firearm.

Scyffore was waiting to pick up his girlfriend who works at the mall. He is being held on $10,500 bond.
