The last time police were called to the home of 66-year-old Deborah Danner, she left in a straight jacket, recalled a neighbor who witnessed the incident. Danner was schizophrenic and police, who had been called to her apartment several times, knew it. That knowledge did not, however, stop an NYPD police sergeant from fatally shooting Danner on Tuesday.
After a neighbor called 911 to report a disturbance, a police sergeant arrived to find Danner naked and armed with scissors. Danner put the scissors down when asked, but then allegedly picked up a bat and charged the officer. The unnamed officer, who was also armed with a Taser, fatally shot Danner.
Danner was struck twice in the torso and died at the hospital.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Raphelle Gundy, a resident of the building where the deceased woman lives, “said she thought the woman had mental issues and neighbors often heard violent noises coming from her home.”
ABC 7 reports that police visited Danner’s home at least once a week when she was “off her meds”.
In her social media postings, Danner discussed racism and Black Lives Matter.
“Point of the Conversation: How’d U like to move about w/a TARGET on you because of the color of your skin? BLACK LIVES MATTER!” she wrote.
The elderly woman was also looking forward to the years she had left:
The NYPD is conducting an investigation of the officer who fatally shot the elderly, mentally disturbed woman.
