Bill Clinton called on African-Americans to help protect police officers during his speech at the Democratic National Convention. Speaking at the funeral of the slain Baton Rouge, La. officers on Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden seemed to echo the need for all Americans to prove that they value law enforcement officers.

“If you’re a young African American disillusioned and afraid, we saw in Dallas how great our police officers can be,” Clinton told the crowd at the Democratic National Convention. “Help us build a future where nobody’s afraid to walk outside, including the people that wear blue to protect our future.

African-Americans, however, are not responsible for ensuring the safety of police officers. The only way  to ensure the safety of both our communities is to overhaul an injustice system that currently protects police officers at all costs.

Speaking at a memorial service on Thursday in Baton Rouge to honor three police officers who were killed by a military veteran, Vice President Joe Biden said he’d heard that Alton Sterling’s aunt had prayed for the families of the slain officers. Sterling was fatally shot by Baton Rouge officers while selling CDs outside of a convenience store.

“Loss is loss is loss,” Biden said, according to Reuters.[1]  “Now the city has to reach out, the country has to reach out to law enforcement, and let you know how much we care.”

One of the officers remains in critical condition in a Baton Rouge hospital.
