Is Mediocrity the New Black? On Calling President Obama “My N****”

During the White House Correspondents Dinner, late night host Larry Wilmore called President Obama “my n****”.

“When I was a kid I lived in a country where people couldn’t accept a black quarterback … Now think about that: A black man was thought by his mere color not good enough to lead a football team. And now to live in your time, Mr. President, when a black man can lead the entire free world,” Wilmore said during the gala event.

“Words alone do me no justice. So Mr. President if I’m going to keep it 100: Yo Barry, you did it my n—-” Wilmore exclaimed. “You did it.”

Although some observers were fine with the N-word being used in that setting, BreakingBrown.com’s Yvette Carnell and ToneTalk’s Antonio Moore vehemently disagree. Watch the video below.

Excellent point about us not being afforded the luxury of being exclusively concerned with our own individual plight. I wonder if Mr. Wilmore fully considered the implications of using the term before an audience that primarily consisted of colorless people. Whatever his intention, the joke fell flat. Referring to POTUS as a racial epithet completely sullies the dignity of the office and as others have stated, it was neither the time nor the place for sharing those kind of "benevolent" sentiments. Even if one just couldn't restrain his or herself, why do this at a public venue as opposed to a private space? The fact that Mr. Wilmore felt compelled to do this before a televised audience wreaks of desperation.
