Sean “Diddy” Combs Joins the Charter School Hustle: 7 Reasons Charter Schools Are Horrible for the African-American Community

Charter schools have become ATMs for black business-people and so-called ‘educators’ pretending to provide options for kids in failing inner-city schools.

According to the Root, charter school guru Dr. Steve Perry will oversee Sean “Diddy” Combs’ new charter school. This is troubling considering Perry’s agreement with Charles Barkley’s description of many blacks as being “brainwashed” and “unintelligent.”

Steve Perry

“There are a lot of black people who are unintelligent, who don’t have success,” Barkley said. “It’s best to knock a successful black person down ’cause they’re intelligent, they speak well, they do well in school, and they’re successful. It’s crabs in a barrel. … We’re the only ethnic group that says, ‘hey, if you go to jail, it gives you street cred.’ “

Barkley then doubled down: “For some reason we’re brainwashed to think if you’re not a thug or an idiot, you’re not black enough. If you go to school, make good grades, speak intelligent and don’t break the law, you’re not a good black person,” he said. “It’s a dirty dark secret. I hate to bring white people into our crap, but as a black person, we all go through it when you’re successful.”

Steve Perry’s immature antics have been criticized elsewhere as well, but his involvement aside, here are the top 7 reasons why African-Americans should oppose charter schools:

1.) Replacing elected superintendents with unelected charter school CEOs is undemocratic and leads to schools where parents don’t have a vote, which means these parents don’t have a voice in their children’s education.

2.) Charter schools are often allowed to exclude disabled students and select only the best students from a pool of applicants, thus making it easier to achieve academic goals, but disadvantaging disabled students.

3.) Most African-American students attend public schools and charter schools rob public schools of funding.

4.) Charter schools lack oversight, which has led to some schools teaching unscientific and unsubstantiated information:

A long description of slavery in the book claims that the state (of slavery) was beneficial to African Americans and that Southern racism was caused by the ‘intrusion’ of northern abolitionists and advocates of equality for the freed slaves.”

5.) And even though “Diddy” is African-American, many charter schools are run by boards that purge teachers–especially black teachers–and replace them with Teach for America educators. In that sense, support for charter schools is support for the purging of black teachers.

6.) Charter schools provide a windfall of cash for CEOs and board members.

From The Huffington Post:

However, operating non-profit charter schools can be very profitable for charter school executives like Eva Moskowitz. Moskowitz earns close to a half a million dollars a year ($485,000) for overseeing school programs that serve 6,700 children, which is over $72 per student. By comparison, New York State Education Commissioner is paid a salary of $212,000 to oversee programs with 2.7 million students or about 8 cents per student. In other words, Moskowitz earns about 100 times more than King for each student enrolled in a Success Academy Charter School. Carmen Farina, New York City School Chancellor is paid $212,000 a year to oversee 1.1 million students or about 19 cents per student.

7.) Charter schools serve as a school-to-prison pipeline for black students.

From U.S. News:

More than 500 charter schools suspended black students at a rate that was at least 10 percentage points higher than the rate for white students. And moreover, 1,093 charter schools suspended students with disabilities at a rate that was 10 or more percentage points higher than for students without disabilities.

The most alarming finding, the research points out, is that 235 charter schools suspended more than 50 percent of their enrolled students with disabilities.

What this charter school means for “Diddy”, and so many blacks who are entering this arena, is another stream of income. And it appears that Steve Perry is the man on deck to teach everyone how to get in on the con-game.
