Activists are calling on South Carolina’s governor to remove Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet after the coroner, who is white, pulled a gun on an unarmed black neighbor.
Nisbet admits to pulling the gun on neighbor Leroy Fulton, but said he’d been drinking at the time. Fulton claims that in addition to brandishing a firearm, Nisbet used racial slurs.
Here’s What led to the incident, according to the The Post and Courier.
Nisbet has insisted that he saw Fulton point a gun at a repo man who showed up on North Palmetto Street to get Fulton’s pickup. Fulton drove off, and Nisbet chased him.
Cutting off Fulton’s truck with his county SUV, Nisbet said he drew his gun and stepped out to confront Fulton. That’s when, according to Fulton, Nisbet used racial comments.
Officers soon arrived and ordered Nisbet to drop his gun. He complied after 13 seconds and about seven commands, according to police video.
In a letter, civil rights activists have demanded that Gov. Nikki Haley to remove Nisbet.
“We believe the actions of Mr. Nisbet were egregious and violate his oath of office and caused great harm to the office to which he was elected,” the letter read. “His actions demonstrated a gross lack of judgment and even more disturbing racist views of his constituents.”
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident.
Nisbet has served in his position for two decades.
