Megachurch Pastor Died of Cocaine and Heroin Overdose

zachary_tims

An autopsy report revealed that a mega-church pastor found dead in his hotel room died of a drug overdose.

The Associated Press reports that Zachary Tims’  autopsy revealed that he died of the effects of cocaine and heroin. Tims was found dead on the floor of the W Hotel in Times Sq. in August 2011.

Tims was the senior pastor of New Destiny Christian Center, a mega-church in central Florida. He began his 7,000  member church in 1996 and made it his mission to keep young people out of trouble, since he himself had a troubled past.

From the Orlando Sentinel:

The NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner’s release says Tims died of “acute intoxication by the combined effects of cocaine and heroin. Manner of death: Accident.”

Although the New York City Police ruled there was no foul play involved in Tims’ death, published reports said that police found a packet of powder in his pants pocket. The nature of the powder is unknown but led to speculation that Tims died of a drug overdose.

“He tried hard to heal himself, to fix himself,” said T.D. Jakes, chief pastor of The Potter’s House in Dallas, according to the Sentinel.

Tims’ death has been ruled accidental.

Religious leaders are not God, which is who we need to put our faith in. Not man. But, God

Sad situation first of all...Pastors are merley ppl who's decieded to lead ppl...Pastors are not BIGGER or better than any...so for ANY1 to portray an image of superiority is error...there is NO safety in wickedness & this is from 1 who does not belong to or go to church...We ALL need guidance from time to time pastor or not.

SIN IS SIN AND FOR ANOTHER PASTOR TO TRY AND COVER FOR THE SIN HE ALSO IS IN SIN I DO NOT CARE WHO U R TD JAKES OR CREFLOW DOLLAR THESE MEGA CHURCHES ARE ALL RIP OFFS  THE ONLY REAL PREACHER TO ME IS  PASTOR JOHN CHERRY AND HIS SON JOHN CHERRY JR. Pastors need help just like everyone else. People all just need to be real and realize we all need God's help every day. It should not be that they csan never have a problem but no one realizes this until it's too late sometimes. You can't fake it till you make it ( that's living a lie) you have to be real and honest about your life. Confess your faults one to another that you may be healed. That goes for everyone, Pastors included.

MarcusWarren

How many souls did he lay hands to for this same addiction? How many people did he declare healed of their addictions? How many times did he look into the face of the people knowing that he was unworthy of saving others because he couldn't save himself. Church folks (blacks), I am so tired of the fact that when it happens to people in the streets, you judge and say they "sinned (overdosed) because they didn't listen to the message God was trying to send them." But when one of your people go down for the same crimes, you demand that no one judge them. This man knew what he was doing was wrong. He knew he should have not identified himself as someone sent by God to help other people when he struggled with his own life. Who cares what TD Jakes has to say about it? It doesn't make it any better. Sin is sin. Titles, affiliations, talents and popularity doesn't make sin better or worse; more tolerable, less tolerable. And it is this form of excuse making that is sending the wwhole entire black community thrsalvation; justification and not salvation. As long as we keep justifying our faults we will never seek to do better and stay in the pits of hell forever. How in just we are to each other. Still we wonder why God won't come and see about us (Read Isaiah 59:1) Iniquities=Injustices

Here we go again with this around and around we go with debating and arguing about bible histiry or bible myths, whatever.

Is any of this debate and arguing really freeing black's in this country from an outdated slave, dependent paradigm

Okay trubearfan but we have to as a collective start to use our basic common sense to keep us as a whole out of trouble.

I mean really I hate to hear and see that this brother passed away under such conditions

@TerryKeith, I was in agreement with the fact that we can't judge the man because of our own sins. In fact I said I thought Pastor Timms is in the presence of our Lord. And we will see him in paradise. Jesus chose Judas and Peter each of them either betrayed or denied him. Though Judas was the son of perdition and would not enter heaven.

arobinson214, I could not have said it better than you or Bishop TD Jakes. I have seen so many substance abusers in church bragging about how they just 'stopped' With no help you are just a 'dry drunk' or one not taking drugs but with no help for why you were and what you missed in maturing when you were. And a person helping others without getting help themselves, especially helping impressionable young people is quite dangerous. Thankfully I know preachers who have had the support of older preachers to help them out of this demonic vise and they are doing great things for the Lord. No matter the death of this Pastor, nothing can erase what he has done to lead others to salvation. My prayers are with the family and the church.

Pastor Tims' died in 2011. He was a gifted orator of the gospel of faith.  Like so many of us he struggled with demons of a psychic nature that manifest it's self through the flesh.  Wishing not to dwell on his death, as the full measure of his life, I choose to dwell upon his teaching of the Gospel and those who were able to come into the realization of Christ as a Savior of lost souls through the gospel as he, Pastor Tims' revealed it..  But, even in his death he left his congregation a message of salvation, rather then a message of death.  His death reminds me of how vigilant one must remain in the Gospel and not be given unto our works as a statement of our salvation.  To sister Revia Tims, and his family.  Be proud of one who has given to so many.

It really hurt my heart to hear this. The Darkness that has always been spoken of is coming to light. People better get it. We will all find out that no man is spared of Judgment, and we will stand in front of the Thrown one day to answer for our sins..peace.

Pastor Timms may have lost his life to drugs but Jesus saved his soul eternally. If you don't believe that by faith then you haven't understood scripture, and you are unable to discuss salvation in light of the darkness you experience.

Rest  in peace to the brother overall. Some black people have asked me

" Why you don't go to church " "  Some will say " You need to be in a church "

I respond by saying " I am still studying "

I am not sitting  in no more churches amening and praying  for some god or jesus   to save me or other black people living under these current updated slavery conditions in  the 21st century period. A vast % of black people need to wake up mentally and stop living under  an outdated slave like mental paradigm of dependence. It's time to use  all your common sense and basic intelligence

to do as much as you can to free yourself period  !!!

@MarvettaVettaMarie- I agree and I think  people need to  constantly study and not just blindly believe everything somebody is telling them, preaching to them.

Also, reading is good but you can't always believe everything you read  in any book.

@KarenClark Karen I am so happuy to hear that all of us are not blind. I am hoping that you will be able to show others what is right in front of their faces The peol who are in support of these pastors and knowingly support sin are in trouble with God.I have heard weak christians say with a cop out " they will have to answer to God". Well weak Christians will go to hell with their pastors. for supporting crime and sin.

MatthewWilliams2

@marshaprz No, Pastors help themselves to others hard working money. A pastor should be able to pray to God for help. ?Isn't that what he tells everyone else.I have no sympathy for Lying, thieving, adulterous, low life self made Pastors and spiritual leaders. Why did God not save him he claimed to be able to pray fo help others. He was right with God. What a Joke on the Black community. Our primayr problem is lack opf eduation and not facing reality. Why did God not leave him here to spread his word.

MatthewWilliams2
MatthewWilliams2

@MarcusWarren  You sre a very bright young man. I can see that you have excellent anaytical skills. You are so right. As for T D Jakes. He is just another man no differeet than any other man. He is living  a lavish lifestyle telling people that God sent him. If some of these Chrictians would only read their bible thay would see that God said "that he would speak to no man". You are right. The man that killed himself could not lead anyone. Her was a terrible example in hundreds of ways. He was a terrible father, husband and family member. and church leader  He used  the money that obtained from believers to purchase drugs, women and other sinful criminal things., He did was a lie. He was a drug addict and everthing that he touched is contaminated with sin and crime. Too many black church leaders are doing the same thing. On a daily basis I read about black spiritual leaders womanizing, doing drugs, committing adultery, among other things. Let me reiterate a statement that I made earlier. GOD WOULD NEVER SEND WEAKINGS AND SINFUL INDIVIDUALS TO SPEAD HIS WORD. HE WOULD SEND A BETTER QUALITY OF PEOPLE , FOR EXAMPLE, MLF, MAHATMA GHANDI, MANDELLA AND OTHERS THAT LIVE A LIFE THAT PEOPLE WOULD LOOK UP TO.,AND FOLLOW. Too maNy of our people are blind and will follow anyone who has a bible and tells them that they are annointed. At the same time getting wealthy, and purchasing material things that God spoke against. Example( L A Preachers), all annointed by God .What a joke. The joke is on the followers.

@MarcusWarren - I think in order for a person to overcome any type of addiction they need to go within themselves and stop looking for something outside of their selfs to change or free them from the addictiion.

Then you have to make sure to stay away from people or situtations that will trigger a person to use or abuse whatever they were addicted too.

MatthewWilliams2
MatthewWilliams2

@soul60 No it will not free us. I have found that most blacks listen to men and women self made leaders.  Most of these leaders have no idea whar Christianity is. Until they begin study the Jewish customs and traditions before and during the time of Christ; they will not have even began to study the bible or Christ. Christ was a Jew. An example:  Unless a person begins to study black culture they have not began to understand us. That is my point. And to understand the Muslims during that time would began to help. Then one must begin to study and understand the languages and customs of all of the peoples both prior to and during the time of Christ.. Most of are leaders are ignorant of all that I haver mentioned.. They cannot read they only  pronounce words they do not They have not even scratched the surface. THEY HAVE NOT ASKED JEWISH LEADERS WHY THEY SAY CHRIST WAS NOT THE MESSAIH. iN ORDER TO ARGUE WITH ANYONE ONE MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE SUBJECT. Thank you for your time.

@mercieSgirl  Bs . this man never intended to stop. The majority of gospel leaders are ethier chuild molestors, Adulterers, Thieves and liars, and suubstance abusers, God would never send these people to spread his word. most. Black people are so undeeducated and dumg that they believe these jerks who only started to preach because thwey could not hold a job. Yhry were losers but good with BS.

@trubearsfan Was his sin better than let's say gay people? You Christians have a problem with thinking that the sins you do are better than anyone else's sin. That's why many of you are repulsive to keep company with. If you read your Book thoroughly you would know that it has already condemned the most of you yet you continue to dwell in sin. Why? If you are going to be a Christian be that or else quit calling yourself a Christian and pointing your finger at others.

trubearsfan

Sense is not common because if it was everyone would have some. And as for basic intelligence, its a known fact that man only has the capacity to utilize 10% of his brain span. Its simply not enough to fight these battles in the fleshly carnal realm. If you don't possess the Spirit of God then you are lost

Jesus said through the scripture thatthe day will come when every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus The Christ is Lord of all people. You either bow now with a clear conscious or later with a guilty conscious. We all have a choice just as Adam and Eve did.

B@MatthewWilliams2 @KarenClark It is so refreshing to hear some of that good old fashioned Christian love and forgiveness being voiced by such righteous upstanding people - folks who not only are totally sinless but also who never have to try to understand the problems being dealt with by their loved ones. To do that you seem to be saying is "supporting sin and crime." I am not a defender of TD Jakes; I know little about him or those other so-called "mega-preachers." But I don't understand why he is being attacked for making what seems to be an observation based on his knowledge or association with Pastor Tims. A dislike of someone should not be a basis for coloring what they say to fit your feelings about them. That is neither honest nor Christian. And if the deceased preacher fell victim to his weakness, that is no reason for any God-fearing person to gloat and tap dance on their corpse. There surely must be more important things to be addressed than criticizing and posturing as though you are the last righteous soul on the planet. We all fall short in the eyes of God and no one has a right to pass judgment on the level of another's sin. What book are people reading from that they are misinterpreting God's word into something that elevates them above others and allows them to look down their noses and condemn? When are we really going to start living our faith instead of pontificating about it and lecturing others on their lives? I'm just sayin....

@MatthewWilliams2@MarcusWarren- Years ago an old classic black man explained this scenario that on a large scale are like trapped in this bag where the  slavemaster is holding the top of bag closed and many of us are fighting like  hell  to get out of it.Those mainly at the top of the bag.But at the bottom and near the middle there are those who are just satisfied to be in the bag and are not even fighting to get out.

That seems to be case today  sure..

@soul60@MarcusWarren Thanks for that perspective. Far to many of us do not understand and addiction.  Far to many are of the opinion that an addiction has something to do with a substance, rather then an obsessive compulsive disorder that makes one's life unmanageable.  Under this definition relinquishing usage of a substance does not lead to a cure, because the substance is noting more then a coping agent.  Pursuant to this definition any one can be an addict.  The person attending Church every time the doors open n can't manage their lives either with it or without it is an addict. .  Once church no longer satisfies there need, they well either find another church or another agent that does. Then it becomes a matter of choice.  No difference in the two addiction from the church to cocaine, because the agent isn't the addiction.  The addiction is an obsessive compulsive disorder that is making one's life unmanageable.  One must attack the cause and not the agent.  And addiction requires more then abstinence, it requires digging the root cause of the disorder.  Amazing I have never know a lazy addict.   Thanks for your input and actualization.

@MatthewWilliams2 @mercieSgirl Be careful in linking all Ministers/Pastor's in the same category.  True it seems that ministers are killing themselves because of the lost of loved ones as the minister not long ago, or this minister taking an overdose of drugs, we are not in their shoes, we don't know the reason why some people can let God guide them and others try it on their own and fail, but let us be as merciful to the memory of these men as God is merciful to us and shows us grace in the end.  Accident and/or suicide both are destructive when our life is destroyed, something that we can't give so we shouldn't do anything to take it away..  I feel for the family, friends and parishioners that this minister had, they are the ones who will need to look to God for themselves and know that God through Jesus the Christ (the Anointed One and the Holy Spirit) will guide, direct, and  love us if we but let Him/Them

@sanjulo @MatthewWilliams2 @KarenClark I do not hate , nor do I dislike T D Jakes, I dislike the lies and stealing that he and other Black church leaders are spouiting to poor and ignorant people. Yes knowingly supporting sin and crime is sinful.. No one is tap dancing on anyones corpse. I am saddened by the mans inability to be an honest, good Christian leader, and that is true for most of our Spirirual unknowledgeable Black leaders.  I am not the most rightous person on earth, however i am closer to righous than our chursch leaders. I refuse to follow these self made ,lying  doctors, most of whom can barely speak English. It took me a mimimum of 17 years to complete a Docorate. and sevral hundreds of thousand of dollars. These people became doctors overnight. They know vey little about religion or Jesus. I have several friends /scholars of religion. None of them know each other , yet each of them have assured me that a person can never begin to teach or preach until that person has intensly studied the following Cultures: Greek, Jewish Ethopian, Muslim Eygypian These scholars speak a minmum of 9 languages each and have lived and studied in each of these countries for several decades  they told me that after a person has spent that time studying then they will have scratched the surface of knowledge about religion and jesus.

sWarren - This is what has happened.

During the late 60's and thru the 70's the post civil rights era  it's obvious to many of us got to comfortable with the so-called victories or gains during that era.I also noticed where I lived and grew up at .There was some of us who really did not care or give  damn about helping some other black's make it or be succesful.

They became selfish and got caught up in all  70's,80's and up to now all this excessive consumerism non-sense. So now we are bearing witness to the fruit and results of that activity. So of course in this case the white man or slavemaster can't be completely blamed.

MatthewWilliams2
MatthewWilliams2

@soul60 @MatthewWilliams2 @MarcusWarren Right, the thing that bothers me most is so many young black children are watching their loved ones follow these people ;who are destroying our black culture. Kids read about these leaders just as we do, and they lose respect for their parents and Grandparents who are followeres of these guys. i run black youth groups. Most older black people would be surpised to hear what these kids have to say about our black leaders. i am going to invite some of the parents so that they can hear what these kids are saying about our so called leaders.

I have worked with people like this man for over 40 years,. He was a terrible person a weak person, and he led very ignorant people. He was using their money to live a lavish lifestyle that is what killed him . How do you know that God did not get tired of his reprentation of the holy spirit. Another thing Why does so many black church leaders stay in the news as much as the criminals that that I worked with in 5 Ca Prisons. Stop listenening to these devils. @arobinson214 @MatthewWilliams2 @TerryKeith @trubearsfan Reading is not fundamental to you, is it? Teaching is one thing. Following through with it is another thing. It's what I've been saying all along yet you all comprehend it not. Look at the Vatican and see how they've done a complete turn around in their practices. The Black church needs to do the same thing on a mass level, and stop that playing around with it's and the people's salvation. You must teach and also practice what you teach. There is no excuse for a pastor of a church that is found dead, because he abused himself with drugs. That is sinful no matter how you want to look at it. And yes! That pastor died in sin! What does your book say about that, huh?

@MatthewWilliams2@arobinson214@TerryKeith@trubearsfan  Apperantly you don't know scripture or scriptural history.  Paul the greatest of the apostle, and the one that was ordained by God, not Christ, to teach the word to the Gentiles, or it would have remained in the synagogue and you would be circumcised to be privileged to it.  Paul was all of the above mentioned.  But you seem to have a good heart or a big chip on your shoulders.  I now ask since you are so aware of the type of man God wants?  Why are you not teaching the Gospel?

@arobinson214 @TerryKeith @trubearsfan It's your own business what you think and believe. I'm glad that what you think and believe has nothing to do with the truth.
