Law enforcement officials say they have reason to believe that the woman involved in a Capitol Hill chase yesterday may have thought President Obama was stalking her, according to NBC News.. In addition, ABC News is reporting that the woman was suffering from postpartum depression.
Miriam Carey, 34, was shot and killed by police on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. after a short but harrowing chase. Carey reportedly caused panic in the area after her reckless driving caused a lockdown in Washington D.C.
The lockdown began shortly after 2PM yesterday after Carey, who was driving a black sedan, ran into a barrier outside the White House. Police arrived on the scene, but Carey took off, triggering a chase. Police eventually fired into Carey’s car, killing Carey. Her one year old baby was not hurt.
Those who knew her say she always had a smile on her face, but after police searched her home yesterday and spoke with her family, it became clear that the dental hygienist was suffering from mental health issues.
Carey’s mother, Ida Carey, told ABC News that her daughter had been suffering from postpartum depression since the birth of her daughter, Erica.
“A few months later, she got sick,” she said. “She was depressed. … She was hospitalized.”
“I would never in a million years believe that she would do something like this,” said Carey’s boss, Dr. Steven Oken. “It’s the furthest thing from anything I would think she would do, especially with her child in the car. I am floored that it would be her.”
Carey was previously fired from another dental hygienist job because patients thought she was too rough.
Relatives report that Carey’s mental health went downhill hill after her unplanned pregnancy. NBC did not provide additional details on why investigators believe Carey thought Obama was stalking her.
