In a shocking announcement on Thursday, a New York grand jury has decided not prosecute the officer who shot and k!lled unarmed teen Ramarley Graham.
It’s been over a year since an NYPD cop chased the unarmed 18 year old into his home and shot the teen in the bathroom. Now a grand jury has decided not to bring charges against the officer who shot the teen.
The grand jury’s decision not to indict came as a shock to Bronx district attorney Robert T. Johnson, and is now under review by the United States attorney’s office in Manhattan to “determine whether there were any violations of the federal criminal civil rights laws.”
Officers said they became suspicious of Graham as he was walking in the Bronx with a friend, then Officer Haste, 31, gave chase. He pursed the teen into his home, where Haste then misinterpreted a hand gesture as the teen reaching for his gun. Haste shot and killed the teen in the bathroom.
Video of the pursuit emerged which showed the police pursuing the teen, as well as kicking in the door to gain access to the teen after he ran into the house. After the teen was fatally shot by Haste, it was revealed that he was unarmed.
This case against Haste has taken a few twists and turns. The New York Times reports:
The resulting tensions in the community had been largely calmed after Officer Haste was initially indicted last year on manslaughter charges. But a judge dismissed the indictment in May, saying prosecutors had improperly precluded the grand jury from considering Officer Haste’s claim that he believed that Mr. Graham was armed, based on what he had heard fellow officers say over a police radio.
The judge’s ruling allowed prosecutors to seek a new indictment.
Officer Haste said he repeatedly told Graham to “show me your hands.”
Taking questions outside the courthouse, Mr. Graham’s father, Frank Graham, said, “Everything just seems dark.” The family is also suing the police department.
This decision caused actor Samuel L. Jackson to tweet that it’s “open season” on “young brothers”.
