Up at Yourblackworld, I have a few words about George Romney’s admission that his family once had to be taken care of by the U.S. government. There’s a blurb following the video:
That’s Mitt Romney’s father saying his immigrant parents were on the government dole after being ran out of “Old Mexico.” I don’t know what you call that folks, but I call it welfare.
This isn’t a big deal for me because I don’t dislike immigrants. I don’t dislike Mexicans. And I don’t dislike Mexican immigrants. But for a man who not only exists within, but seeks to inherit the helm of the Republican Party, a Party that not only scuttled immigration reform, but currently harbors at least two presidential candidates who proudly drop the welfare bomb for votes, this is huge.
What George Romney did in that moment on the sidewalk with that reporter was genius; he flipped it, and demonstrated that not all rich people are alike. That some rich people do come up from the bottom, through the everyday rank and file. The flipside of that coin, of course, is that not all poor people are alike either. The majority of poor people, those on public assistance, aren’t just sitting around for the sake of it. There are actual flesh and blood people who, like Mitt’s grandparents, need government help as somewhat of a placeholder until they can find steady work.
